About the event: Poetics of Resistance features two poets in conversation with each other – Sara Abou Rashed, who is Palestinian American and Muslim, and Isaac Pickell, who is African American and Jewish. They will each share poems around themes of resistance and exile, memory, and identity. Following the readings, University of Michigan Professor Bryan Roby will moderate a discussion with the poets. The moderated discussion will allow attendees to more deeply understand each poet and their journey.
This event is occurring during National Poetry Month, which honors poetry’s significance in American history and culture as well as its ability to inspire change. Poetry demands the attention of listeners, introducing them to new perspectives as well as grappling with uncomfortable truths about our world. The works of these two poets will invite listeners to mourn the devastation in Gaza and imagine shared liberation.
